RESISTANCE NESTS

Part of the German defenses along the French coast were widerstandsnests (WNs) or “resistance nests.” Many were just trenches dug in the ground with tunnels that connected them to other nests nearby. The best of the resistance nests offered more protection. They were actual bunkers with ceilings made of concrete more than 6 feet (1.8 meters) thick. Some nests could hold up to 30 men and guns of various sizes. The men fired their guns through openings in the walls.

One resistance nest along the coast of Normandy, WN 62, held 20 men and had four machine guns and three larger guns. Land mines and barbed wire protected the nests. In some places, deep trenches meant to stop advancing enemy tanks ran between two nests. Despite their best efforts, soldiers stationed at WNs in Normandy faced fierce fighting when the Allies attacked.
